Field note / 003

The backyard had other plans.

Jim Bowsher spent nearly two decades placing boulders, gates, salvaged objects, and monuments across what became a two-acre art environment behind his Wapakoneta home. He built it as a refuge: a place for young people—and anyone else who needed it—to feel accepted or simply find room to breathe.

The approach is unceremonious: a narrow driveway between house and hedge, then suddenly stone passages, red gates, weathered figures, and small inscriptions layered beneath the trees. Nothing announces itself loudly. It just keeps unfolding.
